The Importance of Self-Care for Creatives

Self-care is defined as the practice of protecting one’s own well-being and happiness especially during a time of stress. The first thing many may think about is having a nice bath with a face mask which is simple but a great form of self-care. As creatives, it’s important to always care for your own self as it’s easy to slip into things such as creative blocks. By making time for self-care, it can greatly help to generate inspiration, motivation, confidence, health and so much more for yourself that in turn, could lead to success; which is something that we all want of course! Let’s go through some things you can do to incorporate self-care into your life, whether it’s a full day or just an hour of the day.

1. Spend time with yourself outside

You may be thinking, of course spending time with yourself is something to do for self-care but honestly, it’s something that is such a great first step into having a healthy routine and learning about yourself. By simply just taking some time for yourself by going on walk/hike somewhere with (or without) a nice view can help you get comfortable with being alone, if you aren’t already. After doing this for a while, you can understand what is right for you and start to venture out into doing things like going to that restaurant you’ve been wanting to go to, shopping or just continuing to go on walks. This gives you the fresh air you need while you have some time to yourself to just listen to music, daydream, think about life or just simply enjoy.

While spending time by yourself is a great thing to do in your own home/room, going out alone once in a while is something that will benefit you in a positive way that being inside can’t give. Especially since we have been stuck inside due to the pandemic for so long, making time to go outside is beneficial to our mental and physical well-being. A complete win-win situation!

2. Catch up or start a new show/book

As streaming platforms are growing so popular with all the shows and movies you can think of, starting a new show or finishing a show can help you escape reality for a little bit. The same goes for books if you prefer to read. After a long week of work, winding down with your favorite show/book or a new show/book you’ve heard about can really help you transport into another world to take your mind off of everything that is going on in your life. I guess you could consider this avoiding certain things you have to do but it can help you sort of rest your brain from all the stress you have in reality which is what self-care is. Taking your mind off of the stress you have could actually help you see things in a new perspective or reorganize your thoughts which could possibly help you figure out a solution to your stress/things you need to do.

You can have something to enjoy without having stress which again, is great for your well-being.

At the end of the day, self-care is all about your personal preferences and what helps you. There are so many things you can do for yourself and it’s so important to actually take the time for yourselves to discover what helps you as people in the creative field. It can get very competitive and stressful but by having a stable mindset and healthy well-being, you’ll be able to work for those goals in a productive way.
