I recently had the opportunity to interview fashion stylist and Casting Coin client, Esmae Duran. She is overflowing with talent and creativity; I loved getting to pick her brain.
Here’s a little Q & A from our convo:
Q: What inspired you to become a stylist?
A: “From a young age, I was always interested in fashion. I had drawing books filled with clothes that I would sketch and I even dabbled in making clothes for my barbies. It wasn’t until I got older that after 6 years of working with kids, I decided to quit and began working in retail. My first retail job was at BCBGMAXAZRIA. We were required to have client books and style our clients from head-to-toe. At the time one of the biggest clients I shopped for was Kevin Jonas’s wife. It was then that I realized I wanted to make this a career.”
Q: Do you have a favorite campaign, model/celebrity that you have gotten to style?
A: “Honestly, I am very selective with the teams I work with so I’m lucky to say every shoot thus far has been a pleasant experience. There is nothing more dope than getting to work with like-minded people and creatives. However, if I had to choose, it would be the first time I was published in Nylon Espanol. It was a David Bowe themed shoot and we shot at Coney Island. It was a team all women and we rocked it!”
Q: What is the one thing you would advise someone starting out NOT to do?
A: “DO NOT wait until you think you are ready. Believe in your talents and don’t doubt your abilities. I would have transitioned from being a stylist assistant to a lead stylist way sooner if I would have just been more confident in myself. Learn as much as you can from interning and assisting other stylists so that you can apply that toward your career goals.”
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A: “In5 years, I will be doing wardrobe for TV shows and movies. Possibly traveling around the world for work and pleasure. I aspire to be the ‘rich aunt’ who travels everywhere and comes home bearing exotic gifts for my niece lol!”
Q: Who is your favorite designer?
A: “At the moment, can I name more than one? I love Richard Malone, Jacquemus, Rodarte and Pyermoss”
Q: What intrigues you about the possibilities of being on Casting Coin?
A: “I have colleagues in the industry who have joined as well. I’m excited to see how Casting Coin can help excel my career and the possibility of working with different companies/clients.”
Q: During the pandemic, have you taken time to learn any new skills?
A: “Yes, over the last couple of months I’ve been trying to teach myself French and even taken up sewing. I started manipulating garments I already had and items I bought from thrift stores. During the time of quarantine, I have had so much time on my hands so I prioritized staying productive and creative.”
