Get to Know Makeup Artist Chanel George
Chanel George is an LA-based makeup artist that executes her makeup skills like no one else. We asked Chanel some questions to get to know her more and to find out why she decided to become a makeup artist.
1. What made you want to become a makeup artist?
I was inspired to go to makeup school in LA after completing my esthetician course at beauty school. We had one week at the end of the course that we got to play with makeup, part of the enrollment was purchasing a professional makeup kit from Mac. I really enjoyed that week, it was so creative and I don’t know I just felt called to explore it more! I used to think I wanted to work in skincare but then I realized the artist in me wanted to explore makeup more deeply. As a kid I always was doing art, I loved to draw especially so I guess it was a natural progression, I definitely did not plan for it!
2. Which makeup artist(s) do you look up to and why?
I am constantly inspired by makeup artists that are lesser-known, usually, I find them on Instagram. I would say the artist that I look up to the most is Kevyn Aucoin. He is such a legendary artist. He believed that makeup is simply an enhancement to a person’s inner beauty which is exactly how I feel. Even as the most successful artist of his time he still did test shoots once a week just for the sake of creating art. That really inspires me to keep pushing and creating.
3. What is your favorite makeup brand?
I would say that I cherry-pick from all brands. I don’t have one line that I use exclusively. The brands I am most attracted to are in the clean beauty category. I love that makeup companies are incorporating more beneficial ingredients for skin into their formulations.
4. What is your favorite makeup look you’ve ever done?
My favorite makeup looks to do are working with flowers. I love to incorporate flowers into my editorials. I am really into gardening and I just love the natural beauty of plants juxtaposed with a beautiful face. One day I hope to do a gallery show of my flower works.
5. In 3 words, how would you describe your makeup looks and techniques?
Radiant, ethereal, evocative
6. In your opinion, what is the most important quality a makeup artist can have?
The most important quality a makeup artist can possess is the ability to see the inner beauty in someone before they see it in themselves.
7. How do you stay up-to-date on new makeup trends?
I am aware of the new makeup trends and I take them into consideration always, however, trends come and go and they are not necessarily suited to everyone’s personal aesthetic. It’s my job as a professional to guide my clients into the look and feel that suits them best.
8. What is your favorite go-to product?
My current (covid era) makeup routine takes about 5 minutes. My favorite go-to products lately are actually mixing Glossier Futuredew with Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer for foundation. I use YSL Vinyl Couture mascara, Senna Brow Fix in “Nude Blonde,” and Danessa Myricks Enlight Illuminator in “Heaven Sent.” Finally, I finish with My favorite lip balm from Treat Beauty in “Peppermint Stick.”
